The Great High Altar
The high altar in the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Rabka-Zdrój was created in the early 20th century. It was designed by Władysław Druciak. Executed in the Neo-Gothic style, it is an example of sacred art, with rich decoration and symbolism that emphasise the importance of the church and its patron saint.
The Passion and Sacred Images
The main part of the altar is the Passion sculpture, depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and forming the central element of its message. Depending on the liturgical season, the Passion is concealed by a painting of St Mary Magdalene or an image of Our Lady of Rabka. Both paintings play an important role in parish worship. The painting of St Mary Magdalene portrays her as a figure of deep spiritual contemplation and devotion. The historic image of Our Lady of Rabka, renowned for the graces received through it and transferred from the old wooden church, is especially venerated by the faithful.
Saints and Biblical Scenes
At the top of the altar is a sculpture of St Michael the Archangel, depicted in a dynamic pose as the victorious defender of good, vanquishing Satan. The figure emphasises the Archangel's role as the defender of the Church and the faithful against evil. Statues of St Adalbert and St Stanislaus, two great patron saints of Poland, stand on either side of the altar. Their presence highlights the country's Christian heritage and recalls the role these saints played in the nation's history. Modern lighting brings out the details of the sculptures.
Near the tabernacle is a bas-relief entitled “The Flight into Egypt”. It depicts the Holy Family on their journey to Egypt and symbolises God's care and protection. This decorative element adds a theological and artistic dimension to the altar.
Ornamentation and Polychrome Decoration
The composition is complemented by elaborate ornamentation, gilding and Neo-Gothic architectural elements that blend harmoniously with the church's interior. The church's polychrome decoration, created in 1929 by the artist Giebułtowski from Oświęcim, can be seen as completing this arrangement.
The high altar of the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Rabka-Zdrój is both a place of worship and a work of art, attracting worshippers and tourists with its beauty and spiritual message.
